Kai

“Kai,” Jami whisper softly and presses a soft kiss to my neck. “I know that isn’t true.”

How can she say that? She’s obviously saying that because that’s what the papers said, but they don’t know the truth. I’m the only one who does. Although she’s probably just consoling me. I’m sure back in the day she never read the papers.

“It’s true. Everyone knows it. Why do you think Theo…” Ugh, I hate to even use his name. “…calls me BM.”

“I don’t know what that means. I wasn’t sure I should ask.”

“Buddy murderer.”

“Ohmigod. I am so sorry, Kai.” She tugs on me a bit, urging me to turn and face her and I do.

“You probably want to go back to your room.” Look at me pushing her away again, because I know it’s for her own good. But if I push her away, will she go back to douche bag? That’s certainly not for her own good and I don’t want that for her. But I can’t forget she has an agenda in this whole bet too.

“No, I don’t want to go,” she answers quietly. “Unless you really want me to and then I will.”

“No,” I say shaking my head, but I’m not even sure if I’m doing the right thing. Lately, because of her, I’ve been thinking with my heart and not my head. “I don’t want you to go.” Honestly, this is the first time the house feels less empty. She brings a warmth to it, and I like it too much. Fuck.

We both settle on our pillows, our hands touching, our fingers intertwined. She goes very quiet, her eyes moving over my face, in a warm, caring way that pummels my heart until it’s nothing but a soft, mushy ball. I am feeling things for this woman, and it’s the last thing I want to do. Jesus, nothing good can come from it.

“I’m here if you want to talk,” she whispers quietly. “If you don’t want to talk and want to just lay here in silence for a while, that’s okay too.”

With her free hand she pulls my blankets up again after they slip from my shoulders. She keeps her palm on my arm, and while I need the touching to stop—I’m getting in deep here—I need it to continue just as much.

“There was alcohol involved,” I begin, pinching my eyes shut as Coop’s happy smiling face comes into view.

“You were drinking and driving?” she asks, her brow furrowing, but she keeps her hand on my arm.

“Yes, but no.” I pull one hand free and put it on her hip, shifting a little closer.

“I don’t understand,” she says gently, clearly confused from my confusing answer. “You either were or you weren’t.”

“There’s a fine line, right?” I snort out.

“You were the one driving though?” she straight up asks.

“Yes.” I look down, stare at the way my fingers are fisting the blankets at her hip as old memories scrape my insides raw. “We went to a party in his car. He drove, and was supposed to be the designated driver.
